How do SSD's effect programs exactly?

Does it just effect its open speed or does it make the program itself faster? E.g. Steam / Google Chrome

^ This sums it up well, but as a comparison, we can use booting as an example. The HDD you may be used to now has a max read and write speed which would allow Windows 7 to load up in we will say 1 minute. An SSD has can access that data faster than the HDD, so Windows 7 will load up in 30 seconds. These numbers are just random figures thrown out, but you get that there is a noticeable difference in just the boot times. I'm currently on Windows 8.1 myself and from the time I press the power button to when I'm opening my email is roughly 12 seconds. The SSD won't make the program run more efficiently as it functions based on how it's coded, but the SSD will access and write information faster than a HDD.
