I just noticed that it wasn't compatible with my motherboard so I might get the FX-6300 instead, which is compatible. So how would I boot it up then.
No... the 6300 will have the same problem.
Think of it this way. Your motherboard was made BEFORE the fx series of cpus was made. In short it doesn't know what they are. You need to upgrade the bios on the motherboard so it can even talk to an FX cpu and load up. in order to do that you need to get your hands on a PhenomII or old Athlon II (am3 socket) to get the board to load into the bios so you can update the bios to use your FX cpus.

No, the 4130 will be compatible. Even though it's not listed there, the 4100 and the 4150 are. They are the same exact CPU, but with a different clockspeed out of the box. The architecture and everything is the same, you just need to updated the BIOS to the latest version. The FX6300 will be even less compatible because it's a newer generation CPU. You need to get access to an older Phenom II processor and perform a BIOS update or simply get a new motherboard.
You're very close to right, but as i said, his problem is his board doesn't recognize ANY fx cpus right now. In short even with a lower TDP fx cpus, he won't be able to load into the bios. Just take the part you said about the fx6300 and apply that to all older bulldozer cpus. His motherboard was released prior to ANY fx cpus... He needs a bios update.

AMD FX 4130 Black Edition is not a supported processor on the M5A78L-M LX. The motherboard is an economy model that doe not support AMD FX CPUs with a (TDP) Thermal Design Power over 95 watts. The FX 4130 Black Edition has a (TDP) of 125 watts and is not supported.
The Thermal Design Power (TDP) is the average maximum power a processor can dissipate while running commercially available software. TDP is primarily used as a guideline for manufacturers of thermal solutions (heatsinks/fans, etc) which tells them how much heat their solution should dissipate.
Very true. That said the TDP of the cpu isn't really the main problem. read my above posts.
-Ok, so we have 2 issues at play.
1) the motherboard isn't recognizing ANY fx cpus
2) that cpu won't work with that motherboard anyway even if it WAS recognized.
So we have a simple mismatch of hardware. If the OP wants to keep that motherboard he'll need to do 2 things.
1) get a older PhenomII and update the bios himself, or return to the place of purchase and request their help in updating the bios to a current version (1401)
2) replace his cpu with a 6300 or other 95W tdp cpu.
