[SOLVED] how do you clone a hard drive for the xbox?

You could try cloning software like Macrium Reflect, although I'm not entirely sure if it will work with an Xbox drive. https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

You'll have to remove the existing drive from the Xbox, then I would recommend you buy something like this. https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External-Duplicator-Function-EC-HD2B/dp/B0759567JT. Apparently this has the ability to clone drives on its own but Ive never used something like it so I cant comment on how it works, but all the same it will work as a dual external dock so you can easy clone from one drive to the other using Macrium.

i don't want to spend any more money though.. i already spent like 120 bucks on that vintage piece of hardware over the past few days. isn't there a cloning software i can burn on a disk or something?

The free version of Macrium Reflect should work no problem.

Install it on your PC.
Connect the old and new xbox drives
Clone from old to new.

If your Xbox is modded then the HDD is unlocked and you can clone it.
If not the HDD is locked and can only be read by your Xbox.

Softmod is the easiest for someone who doesn't want to open up the system and start soldering but it needs a game and additional stuff like a certain memcard or action replay you have to get.

Hardmoding with a cheap chip from ebay is the cheapest solution but you will have to open up the system tear it apart completely and solder some points on the motherboard.
