How do you connect a PS2 to a computer monitor?

In light of the recent release of MGS3: Subsistence, I'm going to buy a [refurbished, used] PS2 Slimline for my apartment and going to play it hooked up to my computer monitor.

What cables are necessary for this?

an xga box... it a switch box basically, it converts your standard video connecter(the yellow plug) in to an anolog signal for your monitor and also alows you to plug in you normal pc so you can switch between console and pc using the box...

ill be doing this next year since my 28inch widescreen wont fit in my bedroom in my new flat.
 
Get a cheap internal video capture/ tv card for your PC. Then play your PS2 in a window (or fullscreen.) This option would be the cheapest i think since you can get these cards for around $20.
 
when you do it that way using a tv tuner card you get lag on the screen cause the card has to encode the signal then the software has to decode it so whatever you do on your ps2 using this method it will behind your own movements. which aint good for games.
 
I've got an LCD monitor with a composite in (red,white,yellow) on the back, and although most games work fine, whenever I play Capcom Vs SNK 2 I get these 'ghost' images that stay on the screen. i think it's to do with the high brightness or contrast in the game, as it only happens on certain bits (like the energy bars - black outlined in white)

the energy bar after image stays even when i switch the monitor back to my computer's DVI input, and i was a bit worried that it might be doing permanent damage to my monitor...

if anyone has and idea why this happens or how to stop it, I love to hear them.
 
just get a tv tuner. thats what i did and i dont experience ghosting or any lag.

If your computer is good enough it shouldnt be a problem like 4000+ 1mb cache with 1gb ram shouldnt have a problem imho, but dont quote me on this.
 
I went mad searching for the best solution to hook my PS2 up to my LCD monitor using component av cables and I can make a conclusion based on all my hard work behind it.
Just don't go for cheap VGA boxes, you will compromise with quality. If you want to make one-time investment and want to have the best one, simply go for the XCM Mega Cool VGA Box from team xcm.
I am sure, you won't regret. I managed to find the cheapest
XCM mega cool vga box at play-asia and have already placed an order..just can't wait for it to arrive.:)
 
Guys, the cheapest method would be a AV Composite cable -> VGA converter to the moniter for video, and RCA to sound source for audio. Theres also a few products which will allow for the PS2 outputs to be converted to HDMI, although they tend to be more expensive...
 
No no no no .... if we had to do it with composite av cables, we would have settled with any external tv tuner with that cheapo quality on the screen. We want to play the games with HD quality which these VGA monitors are capable of using appropriate component cables and vga box. You don't need to spend a fortune buying a HDTV to experience.

I have a component cable for PS2 already, an lcd monitor with a weird 1366 x 768 native resolution.
And now I placed an order for an 80 bucks XCM Mega Cool Vga box from play-asia because it was the cheapest there with free shipping for me.

And there is no PS2 VGA cable like an XBOX VGA cable available in the market. If at all it is, it won't be as successful as the Xbox one and that's why I can't find it anywhere on the internet.

I can only say that PS2 is playing like never before. I had never imagined that I would be able to play all my PS2 games with such rich color quality and enhanced picture quality.

The colors are truly beautiful through this amazingly Mega Cool VGA box. It is worth every penny I must tell you.

There is no lag whatsoever. You won't see any pixels like you see on SDTV. The picture is perfectly clear and the most important thing is the TEXT appears so clear that I jumped off my chair once the display appeared on my monitor for the first time. Every single character is crisp and clear, which was not the case on SDTV.

And the result will not be vs s-video/component, because this box itself takes in COMPONENT INPUTS. So yes we can surely compare it with the S-VIDEO input.

And Component is better than S-video on any day of the year. Even the sony ps2's manual suggests so..:)

In the beginning before placing an order I was afraid about the quality and reliability of this product and the internet didn't help with any good reviews for this. But then I researched a lot, asked the experts and finally made a decision to go for it. And I don't regret a bit.

I was afraid because no one had reviewed this Mega cool thing for a ps2. There are lots of reviews for PS3, XBOX 360, Wii with videos. And they all look fabulous with this box no doubt. But the question was about PS2. Many said that I would be able to play only the games with Progressive Scan option with this box, which really scared me coz I was investing so much into this. That's almost the cost of the PS2. But I am very very happy to be lucky to find the best product.

But if anyone out there has a ps2 and wants to play all those titles in full glory, this is the cheapest solution with the best results for sure.(Unless off course you have all the money to get an HDTV)
 


Yea, its the cheapest and the most downmarket option, because the picture quality using those tv cards are crap and besides, there is a clear lag experienced while playing ps2 using these cards. A VGA box not only surpasses SDTV in presenting the best picture quality, but also provides you an economical alternative against buying an HDTV. Yes, its that true. I myself have this XCM Mega Cool VGA box and I know how my PS2 looks now on my monitor compared to the SDTV on which I used to play with all the text blurred and almost unreadable.

So never go for these cheap internal cards. They can't handle a PS2. An external TV BOX/TUNER may surely help. But make sure you get one for your LCD monitor and not the one that's available for CRT. The CRT one won't play on your LCD monitor sometimes.
But here too, you will see a bit of lag and the picture on the screen appears to be something painted on the screen. It's not crisp and is just playable.

Yeah that'll be cool if you are able to post some snapshot/video that clearly shows the picture quality and text readability (i.e. God of War). And also explain your setup too.

I'm currently doing it via a TV tuner to LCD monitor using S-video cable. No component input unfortunately.

Sure this approach may be a cheaper option but I'm not looking to get another dedicate display unit if I'm able to use what I have already.

If you are able to compare the video quality between going thru this box to LCD vs. direct connection to 1080p HDTV, I'd like to hear it?

Sorry for asking you to do this much since Play-Asia will not offer me refund if I find it unsatisfactory. Thanks!
 
Yea, sure I'll try to get that camera or else will have to do with my own..which is just a 2.1 megapixel.

TV Tuner has always looked bad to me and this box is way better compared to a TV BOX with composite cables. But you are using S-VIDEO, so maybe the display's quite good. Can you post some screens with that s-video input?
Or if possible a video?

Please let me know what tuner do you have?

And I am really sorry but I don't think I can show you the picture on an HDTV from a ps2. But you sure can check that video on youtube that shows xcm mega cool vga box working on an hdtv for a ps2. Here's the link:

And yes, I understand that play-asia won't refund unless it's a faulty piece. But I'll try my best to show you what this box can do and trust me it's way better compared to an SDTV or a TV Box. Just because of the COMPONENT INPUTS and this box is a hardware scaler.(though not as good as the XRGB ones which are worth 200 or 300 bucks.)
 
Ps2 can do 1080i, althought i think only Gran Turismo 4 supports it.
There is an offical VGA cable that came bundled with the linux kit i think. Dont think you can acquire it by any other means, like ebay, you might even be able to make one if you have a schematic.

About the VGA cable, I wanted to know if at all I am able to get one or make one by myself, will it throw better image and picture quality than component cable? I mean do I just need to connect that cable from my PS2 to the VGA cable of my lcd monitor? Would that be it?

How can I play ps2 in VGA mode if I want to? My modchip config menu shows that option available. But I can't use it. Please throw some light on this. I have heard that games look great in VGA mode.

I want to see if its better than the component video on my lcd monitor.

Please tell me how can I make one VGA cable on my own. I did see a youtube video on that, but it wasn't so descriptive. And what is schematic? Is it a circuit diagram? Yes, if I have a circuit diagram, I can make one by myself.
 
Done a bit of research and apparntly the straight VGA cables only work when booted into Linux (and GT4 i guess).
There is a cable that comes with a boot disc that allows it, but general concensus on the net is that its utter shite and not worth the time.

And I am sure the tuner's of premium quality. I am sure the s-video picture must be very nice.

I have never seen an s-video off ps2. If I can see once, I can tell if there's any difference between your display and xcm's mega cool's display via components.

It's really sad that all the good VGA boxes in the market (XCM mega cool vga box, HD BOX PRO, HIGH BOX, VIDEO CONVERTER) come only with the component input ports and not composite or s-video as options like the TV BOXES (GENIATECH HD GAME BOX, GENIATECH SUPERA COLOR HD).
