I'm getting OCZ EL Platinum PC3200 2GB 2X1GB DDR400 CL2-3-2-5 184PIN Pin Dual Channel Memory Kit /W Ramsink and its supposed to be 2-2-2-5 as advertised but comes like the above, and i'm wondering how to overclock it when i get it?
you don't overclock it without overclocking the CPU... or to be practical, I'd overclock the CPU as well. But, you could possibly overclock just the RAM if you had a memory divider that would do it... I don't know if such a thing exists, but there just might be something like that. Doubtful tho... better off to overclock both the processor and RAM at the same time.
Some mobo have bios that has a "link" feature in overclocking cpu and ram with a ratio. How much? I don't know but Ive always make sure so that the timing would be 1T. Increase frequency and voltage, same as the cpu.
it doesn't make sense why one would need to overclock RAM only anyways... overclock the RAM and processor... that's where you'll see the increase in speed
i will be overclocking the processor, its an athlon 3700+ sandiego at 2.2ghz, possibly get it up to 2.6ghz on stock cooling supposedly, but i've never overclocked anything before and will probably have to have someone help me, just wondering if the RAM speed is in the bios and you overclock it there.
so increasing the fsb lowers timings from 2-3-2-5, to 2-2-2-5? how low can it go, to 1-1-1-1, is that possible, which number has the biggest effect on performance?
Im no expert on overclocking but no you cant get the timings that low. what u do is adjust the FSB in BIOS. Take baby steps also you'll eventually get to the point when u will have to increase voltage in order to keep it stable. Your CPU could also be the part that is keeping it from overclocking to the max mem. So at first keep a 1:1 cpu:memory ratio. So if your using an AMD increase the FSB to say 245MHz but it wont post so lower your multiplier. You will also have to have slower timings such as 3-3-3-5 mabey. Tho timings arent too important anymore, so u dont have to worry about that
Hey corvetteguy, i would really sit down and read this guide put out by the guys at DFI street. They have it all layed out nicely and fairly easy to understand....here is the link
