How do you tell if a HDD you bought is defective or not?

Say you buy an HDD from Newegg, how would you know if it's defective or not when it arrives?

Have you installed it and tried using it? You could run tests on it (like HDtune) to test the health of the drive.

I was just wondering if it's possible, since I don't feel like paying taxes in store and gonna just buy online.

Newegg is trusted one, if u still in a doubt you can always check it by third party software like HDD sentinel when you have your ordered HDD in your hand. And most important it also provide the facility for RMA.
