How do you guys troubleshoot/diagnose performance issues?

Hi i was wondering how you guys troubleshoot\diagnose performance issues ingame, like stutters for instance. I have gotten rid of most stutters with blurbustersguide for freesync, and capping the framerate and improving frame pacing seems to improve the experience tremendously, but i still have one few big spikes that break immersion immediately, and i was wondering what do you guys do to find the root cause, like your methods or thought process. Well thanks for your time, hope you can help me xD

Immediate things to check:
  • Are the parts overheating?
  • Did I forget to set the correct power profile?
  • Is there anything else that might be going on that I forgot I was running?
Other things to check:
  • Is this a recent enough game that I should probably update my GPU drivers for?
  • Are any other games having this problem?
  • Does this problem go away if I do a clean boot?
  • Did a recent update to the game cause issues?
  • Did a recent Windows update cause issues?
I guess lucky for me, I haven't really needed to go beyond the immediate scope.

If you only get one big spike once in a while it's probably the ram filling up and having to swap things out.
I don't know for sure but I think that will happen with any amount of ram, if you play long enough it will fill up eventually and swap things out.
