How does a ethernet wall jack work

i was wondering how wall jack for an ethernet cable works. I thought that you plug wall jack into a wall socket and then connect an ethernet from the wall jack to a pc. I want to know where does everything plug into and what things i would need to buy.

Generaly you buy a pair of ethernet wall jacks and put one at the point where your router is where the internet comes in and anouther one in a different room and conect that to your PC and you have internet at your PC without drilling cat 6 through the wall very handy and work well

Check this before buying. In the UK, the powerline adapters have to be plugged in to sockets on the same circuit and I can't see it being any different elsewhere so if you have upstairs and downstairs circuits, you could have a problem.
