How does an NVMe Drive work?!

So I'm about to build a new system and seeing that NVMe drives are really fast, I'm thinking of putting one on it. I found an x2 NVMe drive, which covers my needs in terms of speed BUT I don't get how PCI lanes work. Knowing that the drive is x2 I'd guess that it would "take" 2 pci lanes of a PCIe slot??!! Does that affect my GPU which is placed on the x16 slot? I'd love to know what's up.

you probably want a newer Gen3x4 nvme drive first off. If you are using new mobo, it should be able to boot off it and can use an x2 but x4 will yield the incredible speed

A PCIE based SSD will be using lanes from the chipset on the motherboard, they do not use any CPU pcie lanes. So no it will not a affect a GPU which gets it's pcie lanes from the CPU not the chipset.

I know that x4 NVMe drives pack a lot more power, but I'm opting for a budget drive, so x2 will do.
