How does defense work?

Does your defense (or a monster's) reduce the chance of being hit or does it
reduce the damage dealt if hit, (or both or neither)? It would help me to
decide on armor choices if I knew specifically how defense works, ie- is it
better to have a belt with a lower defense but an attribute such as replenish
life or take a higher defense belt with no additional attributes?
Thanks.

It reduces the chance of being hit.Items with defence it would depend
what they add to the total also having defence skills can be a deciding
factor.

There is a section about defense rating on AS too:

It takes a lot of defense points to change the % chance a monster has
to hit you, so always go for the mods an item has.

Also, get a shield with good blocking %.
Unless you're using a 2h weapon and can kill them B4 they can kill
you. <g>

In the case of belts, what you take note of first and foremost is the
number of slots it has. Also, with armour and some shields, weight is
worth considering too, especially if you're a caster.
