[SOLVED] how does mouse dpi increase?

I know what dpi is in general but I want to know what exactly goes on in a mouse when you increase or decrease its dpi. is it purely a software thing where the data from the sensor is altered or something?

also why do manufacturers have gaming mice with 16000 dpi? I'm pretty sure you need a monitor with a ludicrously high resolution to justify that much dpi.

DPI ratings are a good marketing thing since a lot of people just look at the big numbers and are impressed.

How it's set, the software tells the mouse firmware how to work, it is not a single thing, it's a from the ground up configuration from the sensor to the board to the software and buttons that control the DPI settings.
