how does the new windows 10 install work

Do i keep everything else besides the os or do i have to re download some things ?

Register for the upgrade and do nothing

Windows Update will take it from there

what will happen is old windows moved to a folder called windows.bak the new version of windows will try and pull all your personal files and programs into it. most times there no issue but before you let windows do an update make sure your own files are backed up. if the update fails...you dont want to lose your own files.

Yes, you will probably keep everything. Think of it as a really big service pack.

However, as with any major change, be prepared for if it goes south.

Personally, I'll wait a few months and then do a test box. I'm to old to play on the bleeding edge.

Don't wanna be surprised and find out apps don't run our $15k plotter's or $12k printer's only use is as something to lay plans / plants on

Depends on what you are copying them too .... USB, external, DVD. I use an external docking station w/ a spare HD in one of these

And also depending on how they are stored.... I keep my data files and programs on their own partition and FBackUp utility .... but copy / paste works too

I mean something like a restore point. So if i download something wrong or something goes wrong, i can go back to how my pc is now

Then you use one of the current imaging applications to create an image. Save that elsewhere.
Acronis Trueimage, Easus Todo, Casper, Macrium Reflect.
