Have Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista OS. Am experiencing real nuisance window message
that will NOTgo away! It is: "Found New Hardware, Windows needs to install driver software for your Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller". I've followed instructions, including restart, all with no
success. In Device Manager under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" are listed (seven
times!) Universal serial bus (USB) controller, and (seven times!) "Unknown device". I've
disabled all and find my printer will not work. I uninstalled everything associated with my printer
(USB connected to my laptop) and inserted original printer disc...still no working printer. After
re-enabling all items mentioned above my printer again works. I use no USB ports except for
printer and a Maxtor storage device for backing up my files. I'm at "wit's-end"...would greatly
appreciate help. Thanks...Larry

Sounds like missing files. If it's USB related then C:\WINDOWS\inf\usbstor.inf
C:\WINDOWS\inf\usbstor.pnf are corrupted.

If you have another Vista machine try this:

Take a copy of usbstor.pnf and usbstor.inf and save them both in your C:\WINDOWS\inf directory. Reboot.
Then try plugging in your USB flash drive again.
