How good is my 10 year old pc? What should i change?

Hi, I bought this PC before over 10 years ago, I mean, my father did. But now it really sucks. Cant play anything.

Here are the specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2,40GHz
RAM: Uknown 4GB 800MHz (its using only 3-dont know why-)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 512MB
MOBO: Asus P5B
HDD: 320GB
PSU: MSI 350W

I would love to hear your suggetions what to upgrade or should i built a whole new PC?
I would definetly 1st look at upgrading even if it is not that big upgrade and i wont be able to do a lot again.

Hmm, dont know what to say. I would probably go for budget best buy. I hope u understand what I'm trying to say.

But if you aren't gonna play demanding AAA titles (which demand perfomance) you could get off with current system.
But its gonna be better if you build new system then upgrade it over a year.

The memory issue may be because the Windows version installed is 32 bit, which will always show less than 4Gb of memory available, no matter how much is actually installed, this is a restriction of a 32 bit operating system and you can only get round it by installing a 64 bit OS.
Out of curiosity, which Windows is installed?

What games are you hoping to play?

How much can you spend on a new system or upgrades?

IMO that 8600 GT 512MB is the biggest limiting factor, if you did upgrade anything you can get a cheap card like this GeForce GTX 650 for $45 would be a good bet, almost 5x faster lol and you will be at least be able to play a lot of older titles like CS:GO (and other source games, garrys mod, hl2, plus all the mods available), the older Red Orchestra titles, low-resource games like Terraria, etc - good lists here, here, here, and here.

EDIT - quick PSU check, your 350w PSU should be just fine with the GTX650

If he is willing to play demanding games, then new system is advised, if not then this system will hold up with just a GPU upgrade.
I've got Q6600 with R7 250 and i can play GTA 5 lowest settings, and some other games, unless they require more than 1.5GB vram.

Quite true, although I was in a similar situation with my old celeron e3400 rig w/ 2gb ram running linux, the jump from a 7800gt to an HD5670 made quite a difference... Games that were not able to run at all became enjoyable. Still going at my parents house, always a blast of nostalgia when we visit. Doubles nicely as an HTPC to a ultra-budget coby 720p tv as well.

10 years old time to build new.
