With discounts and coupon codes, I can get this new Dell desktop for $431 plus tax:

4th Generation Intel® Core i5-4460 Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.40 GHz)
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz (4GBx2)
1TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
Intel 4600 HD Graphics
DW 1705 802.11bgn + Bluetooth 4.0, 2.4 GHz, 1x1

It would be for general home use. How likely is it that I would be able to find something noticeably better for the same price (or close to it) over the next few months?

That's not bad for the price but an i5 seems overkill for general home use. My mum has a Pentium G620 and 4GB RAM in her PC and it still feels as quick as ever, mainly because of the SSD, which I'd recommend. If you're willing to build a PC, you could go for this:

Should be slightly cheaper as the price includes tax as far as I know, it will feel faster because of the SSD and will have a better quality PSU too.
