How good of speakers do I need?

I have a 46"Sony flat screen tv. I would like to add 2 desktop external speakers without a sub woofer. I believe I need an amplifier for them. Do you have any suggestions?

We need a ball park budget, size of room/listening position, etc Also perhaps location and willingness to dip in the used market could be a factor as well ^^
