I have a athlon 64 3000 socket 754 and I'm wondering what people out there have been able to overclock there chip to. and if you have pc3700 memory does that mean the highest you can get your cpu overclock to is 2330 mgz.

I've heard (don't have an A64 myself) they can do 2.4ghz or so on air pretty easily.

You can bump the fsb up higher by using a memory divider - e.g. set the RAM to 166, then set the fsb to 240 (making the CPU 2.4 at stock multiplier) and your memory is running at 200 - since you have PC3700, at that divider you could run at 276 and not OC your ram (though 2.76ghz on the CPU may be too much - but if you lower the multiplier to 9 that gives you 2.48g).

Also, many ram modules can OC pretty easily with looser timings. I'ts a lot of test change and retest. Read the overclocking sticky at the top of the section for more info on how to do it. You just have to find the max stable setting for each of RAM, FSB & CPU, then find the best mix that gives you the best performance.

yeah I'm trying to learn. But out of all the info on overclocking, the memory stuff is still a little fuzzy. Hopefull It'll click in.

I think mines a newcastle, but not sure. It run cool. I have just one case blowing on it and at normal load it stays on 29-32 degrees f. On 3d mark it maxes out at 45 f.

A lot depends on your mobo. The newer s754 chips can usually handle a fsb of 225, on stock voltage, and hsf. I'm betting you can get to 2.25 no problem. Just try by raising the fsb by 5mhz at a time. When you start to have problems, see if more voltage, a lower HTT multiplier or the memory divider help.

check out this thread... guys getting 2.6ghz on their 754's with stock cooling.

Good read none the less.

Those chips max out around 2.4ghz on the average. Anymore requires impressive cooling and/or great deal of luck.

I have a good chip to. the temps on the cpu idle between 29-31 degrees. and on full load, 3d mark, they never go over 42-44 degrees. So basically to start overclocking i need to change the memory setting and just start increasing the frontside bus a little and go from there. WHat makes more of a differenc on 3d mark scores and frame rates on your computer?? overclocking the cpu or the video card??

Games and graphical apps these days are more dependent on AGP cards so OCing the agp card will give you more improvements while upping the system wont do much expect improve your boot and load times. Upping the system will show more only in older games and 3dmark01.
