I am planning on building a router from an old pc. it will be running pfsense and will be capable enough that the cpu is maxed out and not able to fully run the os. I plan on using the mobo Ethernet pron connected tot eh modem WAN and then getting like a $10 ethernet pci card which will go back to my old router which i will disable dhcp and everything so it just acts as a acsess point and a switch. How effective will this router be? What do I have to do do disable my old router from interfering with this new one as well. thanks for your help :)

I had a problem with my kids getting lag during their league of legends and steam games online. I have 10 devices in the home with nextflix, youtube, etc... on a 20 Mb/s internet connection. I finally decided to to install pfsense on an old desktop with one motherboard Lan port (I use this port for my WAN) and a wireless G wifi card (I use this for my LAN/ WIFI). This setup up works flawlessly! I am using a wireless G card with better performance than any of the N and AC routers I used previously. I can run netflix, 2 youtube streams, and 2 online games on wifi with no buffering, stuttering or lag! I have not had to setup any traffic shaping or bandwith control/limits on pfsense.

My old PC has 1GB of Ram and an Intel® Pentium® 4 820 processor 2.8 GHz. The CPU usage is usually about 1%. The RAM runs at 22% usage. Use a old wifi card or the built in wifi card of your old PC if the range will cover your home. You don't need to use your existing router unless you are plugging into the router ports. This is a great home router setup that I believe is much better than any of the store wifi routers IMO. :)
