How high can an FX-8350 go on a Noctua NH-D14?

Hi,

I'm currently using a Swiftech H220 to cool my 8350 at 4.8. I returned home last night to find the pump was dying. Whilst it is under warranty I've never been happy about the fan setup - the fan controller only has PWM for the pump and therefore the fans on the block are constantly at 100% (unless I'm being stupid here).

So, I'm wondering about an air setup whereby at idle my PC will be quiet. Noise is a big consideration as it's in the living room.

Can the Noctua (or another air solution) keep me cool at 4.8?

Thanks for that. I don't see any mention of the temps that overclock was at?

From a lot of benchmarks I've seen over time the DH-14 does a damn good job for an air cooler and is praised for its silent cooling.

Problem is, any air cooler might struggle at 4.8ghz on an 8350 depending on your chip.

what idle and load temps were you getting at 4.8ghz with the H220 and what voltage have you got it at?

Hmm, I'm at work and PC is shutdown until I replace the cooler. Off the top of my head I was at 1.3 volts and idle temps didn't report (because of the below 30C bug) and gaming temps were in the mid 40s.

you managed a stable 4.8ghz @ 1.3v?

That must be one hell of a good chip, as I don't think mine would even boot with that voltage.

Got to give my 4.8 overclock 1.48v

If that is the case and it's 100% stable with prime95 and IBT, then the Noctua should cool it fine, but I'm totally surprised at the low voltage you can run with (not doubting, more jealous haha)

I'm probably wrong. May be that was at 4.6. I do remember it seeming reasonably lower than a lot of other examples around the net at the time I was researching my OC.

I would of got the AOI replaced under warrenty as a backup cooler

After testing a number of FX chips I've noticed that some run hotter than others even when at the same frequency, using the same voltage. When it comes to pure raw cooling performance of the NH-D14 I'm pretty sure it should be able to keep temps under 55c around 4.7Ghz with roughly 1.46v. This is a realistic assumption.
