how hot are the Radeon 9800s

Like the subject ask. I am planning to get a ATI Radeon 9800. Still don't know which one i will get. (9800Pro 128M or256M) Heat will be one of my consider factor because i don't like my computer too hot inside. I read the Toms hardware review on the 256MB version and said this thing is very hot. So how "cool" is the 128MB version? Also how hot is the XT compare to the PRO128/256?

If you don't want it too hot, consider the HIS Ice-Q radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. It has a large VGA cooler w/fan mounted on it. It's won several awards, including Tom's editors choice. It takes up 2 slots, but helps keep the case cool be exhausting warm air out of the back instead of into the case, and apparently the fan is very quiet on the low setting, while still moving a decent amount of air.

Compared to the 256MB version... negligible, since there's I think a 10MHz difference between them? The part that produces the most heat is the core, and it's exactly the same between the 128MB and 256MB cards.

It's hotter . But you get this thing called "overdrive" for XTs, that'll adjust the clock speeds based on the temperature. The high temps are okay, since these cards were designed to run that hot.


If you're concerned about too much heat in your case, how about getting an IceQ 9800Pro, which uses the VGA silencer? It'll dump the heat right outside the case. I'm not sure if it'll fit on the XT tho.

Woodman that's actually not really correct...

the 256mb DDR2 version is hotter than the 128mb version because it's DDRII!

The 9800XT is cooler than the 9800pro 256mb DDRII version, and hotter than the 9800pro 128mb.

DDRII memory is the reason why it's hot.

With 9800Pros going to 256MB is not worth the extra money, New Egg has HIS 9800ProICEQ for $240.

I think it also depends on case/air flow/fans. If you have fan that blows on your agp slot and such then the 9800pro runs pretty cool. I've never had a overheating problem with mine.

the ice q platinum model performed a bit better than the reference model that is comparable in price.

They now make the fan controller bracket (hot air exhaust and fan high low control) separate to alleviate the problem of getting the switch to clear when installing in some case/mobo combinations. This now-solved problem was noted on the digit-life review <A HREF="http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/radeon/his-1.html" target="_new">here</A> . The ramsinks are also now different, better looking, and better. They are larger heatsinks which bridge two ram chips rather than single individual ones.

my 9800pro (running higher than XT speeds) is not that much hotter than my TI4200. case temps havent increased either
