How hot should a modem router be during normal usage

Hi All

I purchased a brand new Asus DSL-AC68U modem router yesterday, and I'm surprised how warm it felt during normal operating conditions. I've measured the temperature of the unit in several places using a laser temperature probe, and it ranges from 38'C (100'F) to 44'C (111'F). I'm getting these temperatures with 5 - 7 wireless devices connected and running. Can anyone give me an idea on whether these temperatures are normal, or if it's running too warm. I contacted Asus support, but couldn't give me any definite figures of the range of operating temperatures this devices emits when in use. They just told me that if it's running very warm, then there might be a problem with it and that I should get a replacement from the retailer. Not knowing what 'very warm' actually stands for, means I don't know whether to get it replaced or not. There's no problem with the functioning of this modem router, so I guess these temperatures are normal, I was just wondering if anyone can confirm this for me.

I'd be grateful if someone could give me any advice or help regarding this query.

Many thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I don't have a working dsl modem+router combo right now (chucked it out because it was hot and slow) to check temps for you, but in my experience modern modems run pretty warm even under minimal loads. I don't think I have ever owned a modem router combo that wasn't hot to the touch. Though I will grant that it's been two years since I've used a dsl modem router combo, and were usually low/midrange units from Motorola or Netgear, not mid/high range from Asus.

I appreciate the quick response, thanks.

I've just tried an experiment to see if I can get a clearer idea of what temperatures I should be getting. I've powered up my Sky Q hub, the newer ER115 model, and left it on for an hour now. Its not connected to the internet, or to any devices, just powered on with wireless running, and I've noticed it's quite warm as well. Temperature at its hottest point is 39'C (102'F), which does indicate to me that the temperatures from the Asus are more than likely normal.

I'd obviously like to hear your, or anyone else's thoughts / views on this, and look forward to more comments.
