how important are vesa mount screen size limits?

im curious how strict the specification for the vesa mounting standars is. can i use a 24in monitor on a mount thats only 'specified' to go up to 23in?

of course. it's more about the weight than the size. the size is given as guideline since people buy screens based on size, not weight. so, it's dumbed-down for common Joe SixPack who buys stuff at Best Buy.
