How important is ram when overclocking cpu

I was wondering how important ram speed is when overclocking a cpu...
Ive noticed when i used a 1600mhz ram i could oc my i7 3770k to 4.6ghz at 1.27v
and when i had to switch back to 1333mhz ram because of the patriot ram going bad on me i couldnt
pass prime 95 at the same settings.

So if i were to get a 1866mhz ram would i be able to get 4.6ghz at a lower voltage?

RAM shouldn't have any affect. Patriot RAM might not like Prime95 or it might be some bad RAM.

thats really odd though...how i get from 4.6ghz at 1.27v passing prime95 one day
and then a week later i had to increase the v to 1.285v. Is it just the cpu degrading?

Shouldn't degrade that fast. Most likely the CPU didn't feel real load until a week later, and demanded the higher overvolt.
