How is a Macbook's storage so large?

MacBooks use SSDs, and my question is: how are they so large? The largest I've seen for any SSD is 512gb, yet the macbook gets 1tb? This is confusing: Do they use multiple SSDs? In configurations such as RAID? Or is it just a larger drive designed to fit the space available? All replies are appreciated.
