How is NVME support implemented? How do I know if a board supports NVME SSDs?

Like the title says. Is NVME support the kind of feature where every motherboard manufacturer is going to trumpet it from the heavens in their specifications? Is NVME support implemented in silicon, in BIOS, in motherboard firmware, entirely in the OS? Is support implemented in the chipset, CPU, other chip on the motherboard?

I've not been able to find even the slightest bit of information on this topic. The only info I can find boils down to "NVME FAST AND GOOD. YOU WANT." Can anyone give a detailed and thorough explanation of the nuts and bolts of NVME? Like, all google will give me is press releases that give me the same useless information.
