How is the Corsair K65 LUX different than the k65??

The less expensive bit is likely sales related. The keycaps are taking their cue from the Strafe series. There's a passthrough USB port, and something in the internals is supposed to better support the controls over the RGB LEDs.

so is the LUX actually supposed to be "better" than the k65 base model?

Slight upgrade really. From what I've heard you wont have to be plugged in to the same computer for your profiles to work, they expanded the onboard electronics to hold on your lighting patterns. Slightly less issues with the RGB's that the K65/70 were having. And the cosmetics coming from the Strafe line up and the passthrough port.

a chart would be so helpful. Is the only difference between the rapidfire k65 and the LUX k65 that the switches have a shorter actuation distance?

Yeah, the Rapidfire is just a Cherry red with a shorted actuation distance.
