In a new build, i am planning on getting an SSD to put windows 7 and steam on. To go with that i am planning on getting a 1tb HDD to put everything else on.

All I need to know is, how large of an SSD do I need for this as I am on a tight budget so don't want to overspend. I was thinking of 60gb. Would this be OK

Solution
I wouldn't go lower than 120GB - you don't save any money by going smaller than that. Assuming you're talking about just steam and not games, that will probably be just enough.

Ideally, go for a 240GB.

On the internet, it only said that windows only took up 20gb of space as opposed to 40gb like you are suggesting.

I am a complete noob at these things so can someone clarify this plz

Ah, ty. That makes more sense. However steam is still only less than 1gb on its own with no games so 60gb should still be ok?

Remember that your 60GB SSD is going to be about 50GiB once it's formatted. An office suite is going to be another 2-3GiB. Then a web browser is going to want ~2GiB for cache, storage etc.

Want to upgrade your Windows version? Make sure you've got ~5GiB free.

Hibernate? That takes up the same amount of space as how much RAM you've got.

SSDs slow down when they get near capacity, and don't last as long.

It's like $10 more for a 120GB drive, and you won't be in a world of pain in 6 months time.
