It really depends..
Why haven't you considered the GTX 770? It performs better at 1080p and those CUDA cores are especially useful for particular editing software and things like that.
The reason for the price-rise in the 280X is the hype in bit coin mining, hearing people buying 50 of these at a time a first wonder.. if your making that much money then why the need to make more o_0 that's roughly 15grand. The ASIC chips is what make them so bitcoin hungry, still imo bitcoin mining is pretty foolish and you could invest that money in more porfitable things.
Anyway you have to take into account of the amount of dedication puts into their GPU drivers, it's not as well worked as Nvidia, not to mention Nvidia's new software which optimizes game makes people lean towards Nvidia cards nowadays. Hell even 2 GTX 770s in sli is roughly as powerful as a Titan.
The only good thing imo about the 280X against the 770 is the 3GB of VRAM, that's useful for people who either use 150+ mods in there games that feature high resolution textures or just gaming at resolution at 2k and such. And since it costs $420 and you're willing to pay that than buying the 4GB version of the GTX 770 would be alot smarter.
Might I ask.. why not just get the GTX 770? there's three free games with it. Something AMD hardly does which is gives free games, actually im wrong they do. However it's from a table created maybe 2 years ago which include games from that era, unlike Nvidia that gives you the latest games
i looked at nvidias 3 free games,
assassin's creed - i burnt out on those games, and sailing in a game that's to easy isn't going to bring me back
splinter cell - outside of the original trilogy i have no interest, and this one doesn't seem to be an improvement.
batman arkham origins - i haven't beaten the first 2 yet and will most likely burn out on the second one long before i would ever get to the third.
amd, if you can get a 7970, offers up thief, a game i am looking forward to but have yet to preorder, saints row 4, a game i am waiting on a major sale to pick up, and blood dragon, the last of the 5-7 games to chose from i dont already have/ have an interest in.
than there is also mantle, i don't have the best cpu, and if that does what i think it does it should give my system some new life for any game that supports it.
i would also put amd cards above cuda, just because most applications i use have an opencl integration already and amd is better.
than there are personal grievances that i have with nvidia that are fairly petty, from them gimping games for competitors, making proprietary software and then making it run like hell so the gpu looks better...
but when it comes down to it, amd is in the new consoles, i have to imagine that if things get ported to the pc, they will run better on amd than nvidia.
i'm able to wait for amd to get cheaper, but i'm not paying no 420+$ for one.
