I've managed to get a used Seasonic Prime Ultra 850 Titanium power supply, the guy bought it new early 2020.
It still has 9+ years remaining of it's warranty.
My question would be, how long can I safely use this for before having to swap it out for a new one?
I'm well aware that it is a top unit and stuff like this shouldn't be a concern, but I'd love to hear from someone who has more experience than I do, especially since this was picked up as used.

Thanks in advance for every answer!

Not sure you can get an "accurate answer". Speculation and anecdotes are about all you can expect.

The average of 6 years and 4 years is 5.

The average of 1 year and 9 years is also 5.

Who's to say where your particular experience will land?

It's a quality unit. My decision would be based on the degree of discount from a new example. If 20 percent, I probably would not bite. At 50 percent, I might. That's my personal opinion and may differ wildly from yours. You may bite heavily at 20 percent.

IF......IF....the "guy" is in fact reliable about the purchase date and IF you have no reason to believe the PSU might have been run at a high load for an unusually high percentage of its powered on hours. Are you confident of all of that?

All of that tempered by your own feelings...which are totally unknown but will and should drive your decision. Try to take the path of least buyer's remorse.

Hey there,

The PSU, and maybe GPU are the two things I'd never buy used. Just a bit too risky for my liking.

With that said, yes, that's a really good PSU. They and others are sold with long warranties, because they are made with quality parts. Typically, a PSU if not seriously abused will last that long and maybe longer.

Almost impossible to determine how long it will last. Unknown previous use. It could have been running under heavy load 24/7, which would not be great (although they are designed to do that too).

What specs are you using in this system?

Edit: Agree with @Lafong , price is key here to make it worthwhile.

I'd be comfortable with it working well for another decade. But it could be 0 days or it could be 30 years (though please don't use a 30-year-old PSU in 2050).

It should be safe until it dies, however, since it has robust protections. It may drop dead of a PSU version of a heart attack in 2031 or something, but it shouldn't bring any companions to the grave.

The guy is realiable, he used it with an i7 12700KF and an RTX 3080 Ti, don't know about the other components or for how longed he used these parts for, but it has only been used for gaming.
My parts are arriving on Friday, i5 13600KF and an RX 6800 is what I'll use this with

Yep no answer to your question.
My last 2 power supplies I bought for my personal use are still in use.
Corsair TX 850 V2 made by Seasonic. 11 years old went from running a i5 2500K @5.0 with SLI 6970's, currently running my 4790K with a 1070.

Seasonic G series 650 watt 8 years old was running my 4790K system is now in my 10600K with a 2080.

It should easily outlast the warranty unless unlucky or abused. I would change before the warranty runs out unless you no longer care about the pc. My main thought is if the warranty is actually transferable, I would not be surprised if the warranty was not transferable.
Yes it is transferable.

EDIT both of mine are way out of the warranty.

I've switched from a Prime Ultra 650 Gold unit, which I had used for ~3 years and was also bought used.
Never had any issues, so I'm assuming there won't be any problems with this one either, if there will be, I just hope it won't take other components with itself.

Thanks to everyone who provided an answer!
