I am interested to see if there is a general time period that is best for waiting to get a newly released game on Steam. Good examples: XCOM 2 (AAA) and The Witness(Indie) . How long do you think it will be before the first discounts on these games and how much of a discount. How long before they address the first round of bug fixes? I heard XCOM 2 is great but buggy, if I could wait a month and get it for less without bugs, great. I would like to play the witness but I don't want to pay $40 for a puzzle game that seems a little repetitive, will they drop the price on an indie game often?

I've heard games usually go on sale for about 30-50% off after about 3-6 months.
Normally that's also enough time to fix any bugs.

For games that have expansions/planned DLC, some people wait a year or two, because by then the game will re-release with all the DLC/Expansions included for a cheaper price.
Absolutely anything you get will be cheaper if you wait. If you wait long enough, it'll drop to a couple of bucks - the only question is which is worth more: your desire to play and your desire to save money.

AAA titles don't drop a whole heck of a lot in the first year, outside of occasional flash sales during one of the big sales (Summer/Christmas.) Indies are all over the map, and depend on the publisher.

As for bugs, it's like the person above said - it's a crapshoot. Some publishers bug hunt early and often, others take their time, and still other take the money and run.
