So I was looking for a CPU upgrade for my system. And i had found the i7 2700 for a very decent price. I'm wondering how long until this CPU be obsoleted ?

Solution
I guess it depends on what you mean by "obsoleted". It wouldn't surprise me if finding new motherboards for that old a CPU isn't already getting difficult. That uses the Z77 (or even the Z68) chipset. Those aren't available new any more. Does that make it "obsolete"? DDR3 will be harder and harder to get. Does that make it "obsolete"? Intel officially discontinued the CPU in 2013, does that make it "obsolete"?

IF you have the infrastructure, and it provides the performance you desire, then it isn't obsolete.

Boring answer: until it can no longer run the software you want it to at a reasonable level.

The introduction of Kaby Lake has brought out some reviews and comments that it is worth upgrading from the i5-2500k; I would assume it would be similarly worthwhile to upgrade the i7-2700. What is more likely to be obsolete is not so much the CPU itself but the other technology surrounding it (USB ports, SSD drives, RAM, etc.).
