How long will a GTX 1070 last with a 1080p 60Hz monitor before it gets outdated?

And why is a 1440p monitor necessary for a GTX 1070? Why is it overkill for a 1080p monitor?

There is no such thing really as an overkill GPU. Teh only problem is that it would be unutilized. For example, if using V-sync, it might only see like 70% max usage for a couple of years. As for how long it will last... if you are willing at some point to lower some setting, a good 4-5 years.

How Long? that'd be a total guess but the 970 has managed to last all the way until it's replacement comes out and is still an excellent choice for 1080P.

Why is a 1440p monitor necessary? it isn't. It's just that the 1070 has more than enough power for 1080p gaming so it seems like a waste not to take advantage of it and get the extra graphical detail it's capable of.

That more or less also answers why it's overkill for 1080p - because a cheaper less powerful card can manage to max out 1080p so it's a bit of a waste of money. There isn't a cheaper option yet in the 10 series though.

However, I've been gaming at 1080p on a GTX 980 since they were new and don't regret it and many would call that overkill as well. Having the headroom to always crank the graphics to max and not stress out the GPU is pretty cool and now I don't need to buy a 1070 or 1080 until either games get more demanding or I buy a higher res screen.

I bought mine before the 970 was available though and I probably wouldn't have if I'd known it was coming and how good it would be. We do know that about the 1070 this time round.

It depends.
A GTX1070 is somewhat comparable to aGTX980ti.
I find that with a GTX980ti, I get a steady 60fps in civ 4 and civ5 and skyrim on a 4k monitor.
Very few 4k monitors can go faster than 60hz.
Because of the density of a 4k panel, you can lower the aa which is one of the most resource heavy settings.

A graphics card will last as long as it does the job.

I went for GTX 1070 because I play at 1080p@120Hz, so I need those 120FPS.
I get them in Overwatch, BF4, CoD BO3.

Asking myself if it's a good thing or not, but I just can't go back to 60Hz.
Once I've seen what 120Hz means and feels, I just cant stand 60Hz. And for the good of my wallet, I wished I didn't see 120Hz.

i can max the game at 60 fps with a HEAVILY overclocked 980 ti and dual xeon e5 2670s 😛
