I was originally going to go for a steamroller CPU , but I can't bare waiting and I've heard it would come late 2014.

So, I'm going with Intel. I won't be overclocking so I'm going with the 4770 + it's cheaper.

Anyway, how long would an i7 4770 last me? I'm hoping it will last me 3-4 years at least (paired with a R9 290, or basically a GTX 780).

It will last you a very long time. Look around at all the people still rocking first gen i7s that are going on 5 years old.

Having said that, used i7 retail value is like 95% so you could always sell it in a couple of years and get the newest iteration then.

Lol, it'll last you a good ammount of time. If you don't have time to wait, just buy one! You won't be disappointed. And If you simply don't want to wait, and you have the money. Buy one.

I personally believe a i7 will last you anywhere from 3-4 years. Have a good day 😀 I'm still using a Phenom II x4 840! I'm still barely able to get 1080P 30FPS, but it's lasted me for quite some time. Can't wait to hit my next upgrade. I've got the time, so I'm waiting to see what AMD does with FM2+, AM3+ and steamroller. Hopefully by mid-late Q1 2014 we'll know more.

Well, I'm upgrading from an A4 APU (Yes, a crappy APU - I used to be a console gamer) and here I am upgrading to AMDs top card. I don't think my expectations are that high since I am upgrading from a crappy APU.

Judging by the old Core 2 Quad from ~2008, it should last five years.
But there can always be something revolutionary that makes your 4770 wayy obsolete.

Really, every answer we give is subjective, so the only way you'll really know is doing research (like seeing the performance of old top-end CPUs today etc.). I'd say 6 years max. and at least 3 years for really the best gaming performance. Probably longer if you intend to not play that ultra-high settings etc.
