So,my pc working. I have everything except a graphics card. I'm on a tight budget but my 8800gt really needs upgrading. Now this is a question of time v money. I want this build to last me a long time, but is it worth getting the 960 now and sli later. Or wait for 970 money. Or wait for the much anticipated 960ti and 965ti. I would like to have all systems go pretty soon. I also would like to play some games pretty soon. But is it worth waiting. NOTE: I play on 1080p monitor- I also find 40fps acceptable. But, long run what is best. I feel like I've rambled a bit here. I trust you will know the suitable answer.

Thanks- :bounce:

quite a long time. a sandy bridge i5-2500k is 4 years old now and is far from obsolete. factoring in the average modest overclock, a 4690k is not much faster, especially so in games.

the nvidia gtx titan is just over 2 years old now and far from obsolete. actually there is no single gpu card that is that much faster. a gtx980 is maybe 15% faster at best.

you do realize the 290x is stronger than the titan right?

of course a 290x or 780ti or 980 is stronger, but you only get a few more frames at best. but a slightly faster card doesn't make a 2 year old gk110 obsolete and useless.

if you factor in average overclock temp limited to 80c, the titan will easily match the 290x as the hawaii design has virtually no overclocking headroom, 100-150mhz at best. titans easily overclock about 300mhz over their reference clock.

yeah that is very true but the price really killed me when it came out 1000$!

yeah... $1k is definitely steep. but a 970 is still very close to as fast a single gpu card you can get. gm210/bermuda is obviously right around the corner, but they will cost quite a bit more too. but i dont see a 970 not able to run games at relatively high settings for quite a long time. its also doubtful that 4c4t unlocked skylake will be a monster improvement over haswell, but it might see a price cut and/or a 6 core unlocked sku that becomes a more popular mainstream option with a decent price.

Look, kid, it's gonna be like building the Falcon but skipping half the Hyperdrive! If you're gonna stay ahead of the game you'll have to upgrade sooner rather than later and by then you might not have the credits. Besides, hunting around the junkyards of Ebay and Craiglist ain't no fun, so hang around Mos Eiesly a while, get the credits, do the job properly, OK?

Patience I would counsel; wait you should. A weak card you will change sooner, and hard to find in 2 years time will be the GTX960!

Don't give in to the rush! Only a fully configured i5 4690K with a GTX970 at its side can defeat the tides of time and keep the Frame rate in balance.
