A lot of mixed replies up in this piece.
No graphics card will last forever. But consider that there are people still gaming on old GT 640's from like half a million years ago.
The GTX 960 is a great card, and I predict it will be useful at 1080p for at least three to five years depending on the title.
Especially if Dx12 delivers all that it's promised so far.
Up until a few weeks ago I was gaming on a GTX 650 ti at 1400x1050. And it handled all my games at mostly high settings, including GTA V and Dragon Age Inquisition. Two very demanding games.
I recently upgraded to the GTX 960 in preparation for Fallout 4. And I absolutely love it. My only regret is that I didn't get the 4 GB model. (But it was $40 extra.)
