I noticed the 4090 comes with a 4x 8-Pin to 12VHPWR cable adapter. Does this mean you need four 8 pin power cables to supply the 4090? What happens if you connect 3 8pin power cables? I'm considering the 4080. I have two 8 pin cables going to my video card. If I need a third (hopefully not 4th) cable, I'll need to take apart my case and re-wire my power supply. It's something I would like to avoid. Do you think maybe the 4080 might only need two 8 pin cables from the power supply? Sorry for all the questions. I wish Nvidia had stuck with the classic 8pin, or at least allowed the board makers to pick it as an option. Thanks!

No way on the 4090. Maybe the 4080. Maybe the RX 7800. I want the best video card that my gold 850W power supply can safely handle. I'm doing a mid-season upgrade for my PC before building a whole new PC in a few years.

I was hoping two 8pin because the 3080 uses two (non OC versions) and both 3080 and 4080 use 320W.
Yeah but the new connector works a bit different way. For stability you want as many 8 pins as possible when using adapter. Or even better use the cables that some PSU manufacturers are making specially for those GPUs. For example Corsair makes this cable:
-base-CP-8920284-Gallery-PCIe-5-12VHPWR-PSU-Cable-Type4-01.png_1200Wx1200H

that can be directly connected to Corsair PSUs that are compatible with Type 4 cables.

You're right of course. Re-wiring my rig is such a hassle for a "simple" video card upgrade. I might have to go with AMD's 7800 if they come with simple two 8 pin connection.

This BS may push me to buy Radeon. 1st one is a LONG time. Here's to hoping 7800 has reasonable power requirements.
According to leaks new Radeons have lower power consumption but not that much. For example their top card is rumored to use only 30 W less then 4090. So I would suspect they will use new connector too.
Either way it should be 100% industry standard practice to respect cables more, bending cables, "cable management" as a whole is pretty horrifying to me how avg person just shoves all cables in the back mangled to oblivion lol. the 12vhpwr cable easily reaches 2x the temp when bent which at the bare minumum is making the system draw so much more power = heat = whole system is slower than it should be... horrifying. PCIE power has the advantage of space (2x pcie cables have much more space between them for air to dissipate heat and usually thicker gauge. this 12vhpwr thing was totally unneeded and an epic fail. really worth it to save like 20cents of copper lol?
