How many CPU cores & GHz would you need for 1080p gaming?

Solution
resolution doesn't depend on CPU power.
CPU calculations remain the same whether you're gaming at 8k or 640p.

a quadcore with 3.3GHZ+ is pretty nice.
but it doesn't tell the whole truth as it also depends on how well the CPU can really put these to use.

Can't really give any info without knowing which cpu like DSzymborski suggested. Fx 4300, i5 650, i5 6600k? Which game, solitaire, bf1, witcher3, csgo? How many fps, is 30 enough, 50, 60, are you shooting for 120+ for a 144hz monitor? An i5 650 is 3.2ghz, an i5 6600 is 3.3ghz, one is significantly faster than the other.
