How many drives can I have and a m.2 drive

Yes, this question has been asked but I have a slight variation to the question.

I have a Dell xps8910 which includes a ssd m.2 drive slot. For work I do I have 4 hard drives already I would like to move the C: drive to a ssd to speed processing time up. However once I added the drive the computer does not seem to see it. I looked at various bios settings but nothing appeared to apply. Before I declare the drive as bad and return it I wanted to ask online. The Dell chat person was nice but could not seem to understand I was talking about the m.2 port and said of course I have to remove one of the hard drive, how do I intend to connect a new drive?

Very often an M2 socket would disable 1 or 2 SATA ports when a M2 drive is inserted.

That is as I expected but couldn't find anything that plainly stated that. Now to determine which. I can combine two of the hard drives if really needed by getting a larger drive or actually since one drive is more of an archive that one could be made into a USB drive.
