Question says it all. Do only more modern games support those resolutions? 5% of games I'll playing have come out within the last 3 years. Another 5% have come out more than a decade ago. The other 90% are 2006-2012 titles. I cannot check the settings for resolutions as I don't actually have a PC yet which is why I'm asking. From what I can tell buying a 4k monitor and stronger GPU is a waste of money.

More important is which games YOU want to play support 4k resolutions.
Check the game specs.

If you have a 4k monitor, you should always be able to reduce the resolution to run a particular game.

I can run civilization 2 MGE on my 4k monitor and expand the map immensely.
It was made late 1990's.

Most games list all the resolutions they support in the 'change resolution' part of the settings, so if you're worried about your old games looking bad, you can check. Also, it's worth noting that 4k is exactly double 1080p, both vertical and horizontal, so 1080p games might not look bad, but I'm not sure about that.

4k is actually 4x 1080p. Playing 1080p on a 4k monitor will not look bad, but it will be a let down considering what you are used to seeing. Try playing 720p on a 1080p monitor, the effect will be about the same.
