When I originally build my desktop, I bought the retail version of Windows 7 and installed on my desktop. I then had to re-install it again since the drive corrupted. I recently bought an SSD and never got round to installing it. I was wondering what is the maximum amount of times you can use re-install Windows using the same disc and product key?

As he said -- the Retail version can be reinstalled as many times as you want on as many systems as you want as long as it is only installed and useable on ONE machine at any given time (ie. if you install on a new machine the copy on any older machine must be uninstalled) -- If it was an OEM version it can still be installed as many times as you want just only on the one machine it was originally installed on.

After a number of installs the activation server may flag the code but that will just mean you need to talk to a REP and explain to them that it is only being used on the one system and they will give you an activation response code to enter to get it activated (they do this to ensure that the same key is not being used on multiple machines if the key is being activated more than a certain number of times in a limited amount of time but will not stop it from being activated just adds one step.)

Though we did have someone post awhile back that his install was blocked after he reinstalled it 47 times (and activated) in 6 months. Why on earth you would do this I will never know.

As always remember you don't have to register right away, often times I don't. I make sure all the hardware works, once I'm happy I register. You have 30days to make sure everything works.
