Personally the 8400 with a 1070 should and can serve you will for 4-6 years easily enough. I run a 4790K and its been running AAA titles with a 1060 at medium/high for 4-5 years now without the need to upgrade yet.

There's multiple ppl still using 5-6 yr old Sandy-Bridge / Ivy-Bridge cpus that still work just fine, even for heavy gaming. It's all dependent on what your standards are. If you insist on chasing benchmark numbers and alway have to have the highest possible at ultra settings, expect closer to 2 years. If you are good with anything that looks decent and plays well, no matter what the settings/fps then 5+years is easy.

Cpus are not made obsolete by newer generations of hardware. Cpus are made obsolete by newer generations of software. I have a 20yr old Pentium II 350MHz that still works just fine with Windows 98SE and would still be ok with Internet Explorer 5, and 1Gb of ram. But OS has evolved and that system would die a slow death trying to run Windows 10 AND Edge, never mind new games that'll soak up to 12Gb of ram.

Will the i5 8400 last? Yep, how long depends on you, not necessarily with what's new out there in hardware.
