Recently had an old Lenovo ThinkServer 440 stop responding. I rebooted to find the server would try reaching out on the network for an OS, then tell me "Error 1962 - No operating system found" and cycle boot. The OS (WinServer '08 r2) was on two mirrored 1TB HDDs in the 4-drive hotswap bay in the front of the machine. I tried booting off each, one at a time, with the other pulled from the bay. The raid controller could still detect the drives and their capacities, but no matter which slot in the bay the drives occupied, the 1962 error would occur. I removed the drives and connected them via sata straight to the mobo. The server boots fine under those circumstances. I suspect either the raid controller or the hotswap bay backplane might have died. How might I determine which piece of hardware is causing a problem here?
