Recently I've considered buying a 3000 series card to upgrade to from my old, dying RX580. The 3060 Ti is in my current price range, but would it be better to save for a little while longer and get a 3070 Ti? Or is the difference in performance only minuscule? I'd also like to have the possibility of running 1440p or 4K in the future, hence why I'm asking if a 3070 Ti might be necessary.

Solution
I play Ark, which is unreasonably hard to run. The 3060 Ti may be a powerful card, but given my RX580 struggles to achieve 30fps on its highest settings at 1080p, I can't imagine the 3060 would achieve a stable 60 at 2K, much less 4K.
In general 100% better.

Why must you run the game at the highest settings?

You also never listed your memory this can make a big difference with AMD processors.

EDIT if your looking a run a 4K monitor then you need to jump up to a 3080ti. You can figure 4X as good as the GPU you have now to get the same results.

For your question this site is not exact but but gives you a general idea...
I Normally check this website out to see whats the best but 3060ti is more powerful then RX580 and still good cheap card for the 3000 range but might not be perfect to play 4k maybe 2k , 3070ti is great card and still worth the money if you like to save up abit more. But it all depends on what games you like playing and such also with upgrades sometimes you might need PSU that can handle gpu!

Review on 4k 3060ti

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti can do a bit of 4K gaming, but if that's the main resolution you're going for, you're better off going for a more capable graphics card, like the RTX 3070 or RTX 3080

This completely depends on what you are playing but the 3060 ti is 4k60 capable for most games. I tried my 4k60 tv in the livingroom instead of my 1080p monitor and it was no disappointment. Its not advertised as a 4k card but I really think its completely capable. I honestly don't feel too bad about paying $800 for it. And I can test some other games if you want.
Assasins Creed Valhalla at ultra preset consistent 40fps.
cyberpunk at medium/high solid 40-50fps with dlss
warzone at ultra/high 60-70

Well the rx 580 is a disabled child compared the the 3060ti. I just gave it a test and its hitting about 40fps at 4k high settings. Felt great.

Why must I run the game at the highest settings? Because it looks nice. And currently I run Ark with slightly toned down settings so my frail card can manage closer to 60fps.
My CPU is a 3700X, and I've got 16gb of DDR4 RAM.

Also, about your edit, a 3080ti is vastly out of my price range. Are you saying a 3070ti would end up falling short in 4K performance?

Ark with a 3070ti at 4k high would hit about 60fps. Also I think they were asking your ram speed. And yeah no one runs 4k only to play at low settings. silly

In all regards, the GeForce RTX 3070 is faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti when it comes to gaming, the distance between them depends on the game. 10-18% performance difference based on the game and the intensity of the graphics in the game are seen between the two where 3070 takes the lead.

To get a good impression how differently 3060ti and 3070ti perform in games with resolutions 1080p, 1440p and 4K, have a look here: 3060ti vs 3070ti tested in games
Depending on what is your favorite resolution for gaming 3060ti is capable up to 1440p - 4k will not bring the best experience in many games.

As you want to be a bit future proof for 4k gaming - the answer is at least 3070ti .
Otherwise you will soon be sorry having spend a lot of money for a sub par 3060ti which will not make you really happy.

I sincerely doubt anyone, let alone you can tell the difference between High and Ultra settings in most games. But that is another issue we can address if you want. A 3060 ti will play Ark at high/maxed settings 100+fps all day at 1080p and I would bet money its 0.1% lows in 1440p would never touch 50fps. The problem with Ark seems to be Ark itself. No matter the card you will most likely have stutters and loading into maps with ginormous bases will also be a problem with FPS. The game seems to be massively CPU limited on 1080p even with something like a 5900x or 12700k. This is most likely due to poor optimization for massive amounts of objects.

I know that Ark is a horrifically optimized game, but it's also one of my favorites, and it's also the hardest game to run that I know of, which is why I base most of my purchases off of "how will this affect performance in Ark?"

If you think that a 3060 Ti would run Ark perfectly well on Ultra at 1440p, then I have no reason to spend $300 more on a 3070 Ti.

If your talking about Lost Art then just Google the game, card and benchmarks should give some results.

3060ti is a 1440p/144Hz general card. The 3070 is slotted for mid range 4k, high end 1440p. You'd need to move upto a 3080 to get a true 4k/144Hz card. The differences with a 3080/ti/3090 are minimal at best, the higher vram of the 3090 main advantage is in content creation, not gaming.

For most ppl, the 3080Ti/3090 are a waste of money, 4k monitors don't have the refresh of 1080p/1440p and games aren't using even close to the amount of vram those cards carry. 4k gaming is more about the picture, less about the competition, great for single player games, less so for multiplayer fast shooters.

I see. As of the 3060 Ti, there is one company that has them in stock: Evga. And they have two versions, the XC and FTW3. What I'm hearing is that the FTW3 is slightly better, but is currently out of stock.

Should I buy the XC or wait for the FTW3 to come back in stock? Idk how much longer the XC will be available hence why I'm just considering buying that now.

Slightly is an opinion, and might be true, from a certain point of view. In reality, the XC is pretty much like an FE version with axial fans. The FTW goes through serious binning first, then rigorous testing to see if it passes Evga standards. If it fails they still sell it, but as the FTW-D which gets downgraded to an XC, but has the FTW cooling and OC ability.

Physically, the FTW has far superior cooling, so even the FTW-D will run cooler and quieter than an XC under heavy loads. While the clocks can put a 3080 FTW at almost a 3090 ability, that's putting a FTW up against the next class up XC.

So there is a sizable advantage to the FTW over an XC, it just doesn't translate well into FPS. And for many ppl, the price difference doesn't justify the FPS difference. Slightly is an FPS perspective, but for those with lousy airflow cases, or uber heavy gaming loads, having a cooler running better cooling gpu can be a bonus that gets them the FPS in the first place without throttling the card.

If you are at all concerned about cooling or performance on the XC get a 240-280mm rad, 2 soft tubs and a water block for it. It will run faster because of temps than any other card of its tier on stock air.
I'm not buying external cooling systems for my card. I don't believe in overclocking or otherwise superheating my expensive graphics card for a negligible 3-4 fps boost.

I never suggested overclocking your card. If what I mentioned above was done the card would run with higher turbo clocks because it runs cooler. That is not an overclock. The card would sit at about 50C in games and maybe 60 in heavy long sustained workloads.

Ethonodon So what did you end up doing? If you didn't purchase yet, when do you actually plan to do so?
I ended up going with a 3070 Ti FTW. Decided that I don't want to upgrade again for a LONG time, and a 3060 Ti has the possibility of falling short in a few categories in the future, so I went with a 3070 Ti just to be safe.
