Thanks for reading first of all. Total noob question, but they answered it incorrectly on live chat so I am hoping to be enlightened here,
I just bought a new laptop ( have been out of the computer world for 8ish year, s ) can someone please let me know how much I am able to upgrade my ram to on my Lenovo Ideapad S340 i3 processor, and
S340-15IWL Laptop (ideapad) - Type 81N8
is more pertinent information. I know there are a lot in the series so I want to make sure I purchase the correct ram. It comes stock with 4gbs.

I know there is optional 4GB memory soldered to systemboard, one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket.

I dont want to go that route, I just want to use 1 slot for as much ram as I can upgrade it to. Thanks so much. and I know this is a total noob question, but I also know that you guys will be able to give me a correct answer. Thank You so much.

Solution
Actually your laptop supports 12 GB ram max. The lenovo tech was correct. It's advertised as per the spec all over the internet.

Also crucial's site states it can support up to 20GB. I would trust that too.

It really depends on your motherboard what it can support. I wouldn't trust what the laptop manufacturer states. I had the same issue with my Asus laptop. My laptop spec said 8 GB max, but my motherboard spec confirms 16 GB. I bought 2x8Gb ram and I successfully now have 16GB of RAM.

Here is what I would do in your situation:

  • install hwinfo64
  • confirm what your motherboard states. I wouldn't be surprised if it is in fact states 12 GB or even 20 GB
  • buy an 8 GB stick and put it in your avail slot. If your motherboard...
Phaaze88- Thank you so much! Seriously saving me money! Lenovos life tech support told me (

12GB max / 2400MHz DDR4, optional 4GB memory soldered to systemboard, one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket

That was copied and pasted from her. So I'm stuck at 8 gbs then total. Sucks but at least I know now. Again Thank you!

If you are going to take my advice on the hwinfo64, let me know because I'm curious what your motherboard can truly support :)

Ps. You can always return RAM if something is incompatible. I buy my RAM from Amazon, and I can always return it no problem without paying shipping fees. So risk of losing money is very low.

You're welcome.
Do you have time for one more quick question @Phaaze88 .....If not I understand.

This is my laptop....(budget pc)

I have a Lenovo S340 15IWL 81N8 laptop that came with an Intel i3 - 8145U cpu, 1TB HDD and 4GB RAM. I want to add a SSD to my laptop to increase it's performance but I just can't find what type of m.2 SSD do I use and what is the maximum size of the storage space supported for the SSD in this laptop. Also I want to know what type of RAM and upto what size of RAM can I add to this laptop. Also does this one support Intel Optane memory and what kind.

This is the response...
For the memory:

12GB max offering / 2400MHz DDR4, optional 4GB memory soldered to systemboard, one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket. Checking for compatible ram from parts lookup shows available 8GB DDR4 2666 SoDIMM too.

Do you think it is possible. I am not doubting you!

I would suggest you use the hwinfo64 program to verify it though just in case. It's a small program takes just a few min to install. Similar to CPU-z but more detailed. Just confirm what your motherboard can handle using that before buying anything. I would trust crucial's site but I would rather verify my own specs myself and hwinfo64 would do that. You'll just need to navigate to your motherboard just like in windows device manager.

I think hwinfo64 might also answer your question regarding the ssd. It might tell you whether your m.2 is sata or pcie (which then you could install an nvme ssd). And there are no limitation on ssd/hdd size capacity. So if you want to install a 2TB drive go ahead, just ensure it is compatible to your m.2 bus or SATA if you have one, that's all.

Cheers
