How much force should it take to remove a GPU

I am switching out my old 270x for a new 480 today and I have never swapped pieces out of my PC before, when I went to remove the 270x I unscrewed everything but it seems like I am having to use a lot more pressure than I should (although I am not sure how much I should use in the first place) and I am scared of hurting either the GPU or Motherboard. Am I worrying over nothing?

there should be a little plastic lock next to the the motherboard pci-e slot you have to either push it foward or press it up while releasing the gpu.

I had already done that, turns out I forgot a screw that was keeping the lower part of my face plate in place.
