Hey guys! My name is Caydn, and I am a Software Engineering student!

Recently, I have kind of realized that I need to give up the gaming scene to spend more time developing software. I will be heading into my 3rd year of college for my software engineering degree, and haven't gamed in many months... Nor do I have any desire to. Just not into it anymore :)

What I was hoping to do was sell my gaming PC on ebay or craigslist or something, and use the money to get a new system set up for programming!

I will be keeping my keyboard since it work great for programming (Corsair K70), and mouse (I don't even know what kind of mouse it is, but I like it 😛). I will also be keeping my 2 monitors, but plan to sell pretty much the rest as is!

Here are the specs of the system:

  • FX-8350 Processor
    Hyper 212 Plus Cooler
    Asus Sabertooth R 2.0 Motherboard
    16 GB of RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7950 (Sapphire Dual-X)
750 Watt Bronze Plus power supply (I know its overkill)
    250Gb Samsung 850 Evo SSD
    120Gb OCZ Vertex 3
    Raidmax Agusta Case

Anyways, Just trying to get an idea of what I can sell this for. I definitely would like to hear what you guys think!

P.S.

If you have any good ideas for good system specs for a programmer, PM me those or comment those as well! I definitely would like to get set up with an Intel processor for better compatibility with developing mobile applications! I also would like 500gb or 1 TB of SSD space (Samsung 850 EVO is my go-to on SSDs)

I think my budget will be about $500 + whatever I can get for my current system :)

The other option I was thinking about going for was selling my current processor and motherboard and keeping the rest, but just replacing those 2 things with the intel side! Let me know what you guys think would be the best route for me to take!

Thank you ahead of time for your thoughts and opinions! :)

P.S.S.
My signature Specs that are posted below were before I did a few upgrades :)

Hey there 13thmonkey!

I would say the main problem is the lack of an intel chipset. It really can affect programming in a large way!

My main thought is playing around with android development, there are simulators I have come acrosss that would be super useful to use that run on intel and are simply not compatible to run on the AMD chipset.

So mainly the purpose of me upgrading is a few things:

I want to be able to run intel hardware
I want a bit larger storage capacity as I am getting into game development which really takes a toll on storage space
I don't see a need for the graphics card anymore - the money used selling it could go towards better things more suited for development.. Maybe even a third monitor since I will be working with databases next fall and keeping database information on one screen, reference material on a second screen, and my programming IDE on a third screen would be incredibly useful for productivity! :)

So its not that my current PC CAN'T be used for development.. It is just that I want a bit more options when it comes to development since the PC won't be used for gaming, or anything like that anymore. It will only be used for development and productivity stuff.

The next big question is whether I should fork up the extra money for the i7 or go for an i5! That will be a tough decision since I want to save every dollar I can! 😛
