How much of an impact does the cpu have on games?

Hi!
A few days ago i bought a nvidia 1070 card, evnthough it's giving me a boost over my old 780-card, i still think is underperforming a bit. So my question is this. I have a i7 2600k processor and 32gb of DDR3 ram. I think the cpu is a gen 2 of the icore processors. Can this be a bottleneck for my gamingexperience? The cpu is never running anywhere near a 100%, and my machine is quite snappy, but with a 1070 card I only get 40-55 fps in watchdogs2 with everything set to ultra quality (1080p), and 50-70 on very high quality. Other games are like this as well. I can see from older post here about amd processors that it might cause some small performance drop, but not sure with this setup. I also only have PCI-E 2.0 on my motherboard, and my card is 3.0.
And yeah, i run my system on an SSD.

Any thoughts?

It's a good CPU but you can get faster one for a 1070 especially if you are expecting to get to 60 fps on newer games at Ultra.

Did you compare benchmarks for the video card also for the game to see if you are in line with what the 1070 will give you at those settings?
