How much of an upgrade?

I've got an Asus R503U laptop that has one SO-DIMM slot currently occupied by a 2GB 1333 DDR3 stick. I know it needs to be upgraded and am going to do it after the holidays but am wondering how far I should go. According to Crucial I can put in up to an 8GB stick but am curious if it's really worth the cost between 4GB and 8GB. What say you all?

If your os is a 32 bit os, then a total of 4gb is all you can use.
Just buy a second identical 2gb stick.

If it is a 64 bit os, then go ahead and buy a 8gb kit of 2 x 4gb and sell your 2gb stick.

It is definitely worth the extra cost. 8GB will be enough RAM for running anything (apps, games, etc) for another 2 years. Get 8GB of RAM if you can. Like said above, you need 64-bit OS to have more than 4GB of RAM.

It is running Windows 8.1 64bit

You have two ram slots, one of which is currently occupied with a 2gb sodimm.
You could buy a second, giving you 4gb and dual channel mode.

Or, you could buy a 4gb or 8gb stick giving you 6 or 10gb.
Only the first two gb will operate in the fastest dual channel mode.

In any of the three scenarios above, there is no guarantee that the new ram will play nice with the old.

Best, buy a 8gb kit of 2 x 4gb that is matched and guaranteed to work together.
