How much power is too much from a specified wattage of a power supply?

I was reading online that you should buy a PSU so that your parts consume 50-60% of its total available power to allow for upgrades and more efficient performance. I currently have a 600W PSU and use about 500W power with it as I have already upgraded my GPU to a 980Ti. I am looking to upgrade my CPU such that the total power consumption would be estimated to be 561 watts. A rough estimate of these components can be found here. Is this too much to ask for from my 600W PSU? My PSU is the EVGA 80 Plus 600W.

I would say a good 750W PSU.

Yes, that's really pushing it. Think of it as running your car engine at 5000 RPM all the time instead of 2500 RPM. It may work for a while but it's going to break down a lot sooner and run hotter. Considering it's already used, it may be a lot sooner than you think. The problem with that is, when a PSU fails unexpectedly it can take other system components with it.

That rule stands with lower end PSUs however with high end ones thats just a waste of money. Now thats not to say you should be running a PSU at 100% all the time, however the efficency curve of a good PSU will easily cover 80-90% of its wattage. Those power consumption calculators are usually very generous, in fact your system will likely not hit 500w.

It would still be in your best interest to replace it due to quality, its very low. Not with anything bigger, in fact 600w is plenty, but with something better quality. The EVGA 550G2 is more than enough for you. Or a Corsair RM550i, or the Seasonic Focus 550w.
