Wasn't sure where to post this. Anyway I built a custom gaming PC. Here is the list of parts https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Gaminger/saved/

Everything works fine, I just don't feel like gaming like I used to. I'm moving on to another stage in my life. I'd rather make some extra cash and go traveling...

I'm curious how much I should mark up the cost of the PC. The PC is basically brand new. I finished building it on June 2 and haven't used it much since. I played one game, Skyrim, on max settings with an ENB and texture packs and it played nicely. But still, I just don't feel the desire to be a gamer anymore.

It has Windows 10 OS.

Seeing as it cost me over $1,000 to buy the parts + operating system to build it, could I sell it for $1,500-$2000? Does anyone have any recommendations for how to go about selling it?

How much do online stores like Alienware markup their gaming PCs?

Solution
Assuming you paid exactly $1,000 for all the parts and software (OS)....
You can probably max out at $800-$850. And only to the right buyer.

"and haven't used it much since" = 'Used PC'.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to make a profit as you are probably an unknown individual seller. Alienware is able to charge higher prices because they are an actual company and can provide support should anything go wrong. I think you could sell it for 700 plus shipping as the RX 480 has set a new standard in price-to-performance for video cards. Good luck!

umm, nope. unless you have an unsuspecting buyer that needs exactly what you have built, you'd be lucky enough to recover $725 on selling the parts individually or $700 for the system as is (you might have to sit on it to get maximum recoup, but prices will depreciate further the longer you wait). electronics doesn't have a retail purchase/seller markup plan. you'd have to had bought all those components for $700 to sell new for $1000.

also, since the release of the new RX280, used GPU pricing is falling quickly.

my guess is its worth around 600-700 in parts and you would be lucky to find a seller who wants everything. the people who are dumb enough to buy a prebuilt computer are the people who will buy a alienware or prebuilt from a company.

+1 on this. Once a car drives off the lot it loses about 15% of its value.

Alienware is allowed to mark up their items because they have a brand with a reputation behind them. As an individual you probably don't have a company that can offer customer service, warranties and piece of mind. They also make proprietary things, such as the computer cases and modify the OS's. These are depreciating assets. No matter what you say, its just some guy on the internet with no credibility saying he did this and this.

Now if you where a 15 year computer builder with a documented track record you could get some credit for it but doubt it would be much. Kids these days build up computers left and right. They are probably a big portion of the customer base who "upgrades" every time a new model comes out. These days you'll see 14 year old kids with two titan x's bought as soon as they where available just too play GTAV

Ok guys, I understand now. I was just a noob to the PC industry. Actually this is my first ever build. So I guess I'm going to keep it in case I ever feel like getting into gaming again. My first build, I'm too proud of it to sell it for less than what I paid to make it. Thanks for the helpful replies everyone.

I'm also pretty annoyed now that there is a cheaper and better graphics card for Radeon out now (Radeon 480). I should have waited a month before spending $300+ on the 390, ugh.

There is always something new on the horizon.
Either a new line of parts, or sales at holiday time, etc, etc.

I have a similar question, what if I was trying to sell a brand new custom build with all the new parts. could that PC be marked up?

1. Do the parts you have selected mesh with the parts I want?
2. How experienced are you in building a PC? Why should I trust you?
3. Warranty. What happens when this dies one night at 2AM? Can I call you to fix it?
4. How much markup are you planning on?
Show us a potential build, and what you might charge for this. Including shipping, etc.
5. Do I have to pay you first, or do you already have this ready for shipping?

Convince me...:)
